Description

Sambar is a popular South Indian dish that is usually made with a variety of vegetables. However, in this recipe, we will be making a simple sambar without vegetables, which goes great with rice. This recipe is perfect for when you want to make something quick and easy, yet delicious.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup toor dal
  • 3 cups of water
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp sambar powder
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 dried red chillies
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 small piece of ginger, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp coriander leaves, finely chopped

Equipment

  • A pressure cooker
  • A pan
  • A spatula
  • A knife
  • A chopping board

Method

  1. Add the toor dal, water, turmeric powder, and salt to a pressure cooker and cook for 4 whistles.
  2. Once the pressure has released, open the lid and mash the dal with a spatula.
  3. In a pan, heat the oil and add the mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and dried red chillies.
  4. When the mustard seeds start to splutter, add the chopped onion, garlic, and ginger.
  5. Saute until the onion turns golden brown.
  6. Add the sambar powder and saute for a minute.
  7. Add the mashed dal to the pan and mix well.
  8. Bring the sambar to a boil and let it simmer for 5 minutes.
  9. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
  10. Serve hot with rice.

Notes

This recipe can be adjusted to your taste by adding more or less sambar powder. You can also add some tamarind pulp for some tanginess.
