  • 2 tbsp sambar powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 2 cups water
  • Salt to taste

Method

For the Sambar Rice:

  1. Wash the rice and dal in a bowl and soak them in water for 20 minutes.
  2. In a pan, heat oil and add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. When they splutter, add the onions, garlic, and ginger and sauté till the onions turn golden brown.
  3. Add the chopped vegetables and sauté for 5 minutes. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt to taste.
  4. Add the soaked rice and dal and sauté for 2 minutes. Add water and pressure cook for 3 whistles.
  5. Once the pressure is released, open the cooker and fluff the rice with a fork.
  6. Serve hot with sambar.

For the Sambar:

  1. In a pan, heat oil and add the onions, garlic, and ginger and sauté till the onions turn golden brown.
  2. Add the chopped vegetables and sauté for 5 minutes. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt to taste.
  3. Add water and tamarind pulp and bring it to a boil.
  4. Add sambar powder and simmer for 10 minutes till the vegetables are cooked and the sambar thickens.
  5. Serve hot with Sambar Rice.
