Turkish rice, also known as pilaf or pulao, is a popular rice dish that is enjoyed in many parts of the world. It is a simple yet flavorful dish that is perfect for serving as a side dish or even as a main course. This recipe is in Urdu, making it easy for those who are more comfortable with the language to follow along.

Prep Time

The prep time for this dish is approximately 15 minutes.

Cook Time

The cook time for this dish is approximately 30 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds (optional)

Equipment

  • A medium-sized pot with a tight-fitting lid
  • A spoon for stirring
  • A measuring cup
  • A cutting board and knife for chopping the onion and garlic

Method

  1. Start by rinsing the rice in cold water until the water runs clear. This will help remove any excess starch from the rice and prevent it from becoming too sticky when cooked.
  2. In a medium-sized pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic and sauté until the onion is translucent and the garlic is fragrant.
  3. Add the rice to the pot and stir to coat it in the oil and onion mixture.
  4. Add the water to the pot and stir in the salt, black pepper, cumin, and paprika.
  5. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid.
  6. Simmer the rice for 20-25 minutes, or until all of the liquid has been absorbed and the rice is tender.
  7. If using, add the raisins and sliced almonds to the pot and stir to combine.
  8. Remove the pot from the heat and let it sit, covered, for 5-10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
  9. Fluff the rice with a fork and serve hot.
