The recipe is easy to follow and can be made in just a few simple steps.

Prep Time

The prep time for this recipe is minimal. You will need to rinse the rice and soak it in water for 30 minutes before cooking. While the rice is soaking, you can prepare the spices and herbs.

Cook Time

The cook time for this recipe is approximately 20 minutes. Once the rice is soaked and the spices and herbs are prepared, the rice can be cooked on the stovetop.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 4 cardamom pods
  • 4 cloves
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or butter
  • Handful of chopped fresh cilantro (optional)

Equipment

  • Large pot with lid
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Spoon or spatula

Method

  1. Rinse the basmati rice in cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. Soak the rice in water for 30 minutes.
  3. While the rice is soaking, prepare the spices and herbs. Crush the cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, and cloves using a mortar and pestle or the side of a knife.
  4. Heat the ghee or butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and cook until they start to sizzle.
  5. Add the crushed spices and bay leaf to the pot and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  6. Add the soaked rice to the pot and stir to coat with the spices and ghee/butter.
  7. Add the water and salt to the pot and stir gently to combine. Bring the water to a boil.
  8. Once the water is boiling, reduce the heat to low and cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid. Cook the rice for 15-20 minutes or until all the water has been absorbed.
  9. Remove the pot from the heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes.
  10. Fluff the rice with a fork and sprinkle with chopped cilantro (optional).

Notes

  • You can substitute the ghee or butter with vegetable oil if desired.
  • If you don't have a mortar and pestle, you can crush the spices using a rolling pin or the side of a knife.
  • You can adjust the amount of spices to your liking. If you like a stronger flavor, add more spices.
