Cook Time

The cook time for this recipe is approximately 20 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sushi rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup rice wine vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Sushi fillings (e.g., cucumber, avocado, crab meat, shrimp)
  • Nori sheets

Equipment

  • Rice cooker or pot
  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife
  • Bowl
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Bamboo sushi mat

Method

  1. Rinse the sushi rice in cold water until the water runs clear. Drain and transfer the rice to a rice cooker or pot.
  2. Add two cups of water to the rice and cook it according to the instructions on the rice cooker or pot.
  3. In a bowl, combine rice wine vinegar, sugar, and salt. Mix well until the sugar and salt dissolve.
  4. Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl and add the vinegar mixture. Mix well until the rice is evenly coated with the vinegar mixture.
  5. Place a sheet of nori on a sushi mat with the shiny side facing down.
  6. Scoop some rice and spread it evenly on the nori sheet, leaving a 1-inch border at the top. Place your desired fillings on top of the rice.
  7. Lift the bottom edge of the sushi mat and roll it up, pressing gently to ensure that the rice and fillings stick together.
  8. Continue rolling until you reach the top border of the nori sheet.
  9. Moisten the top border with a bit of water to seal the sushi roll.
  10. Repeat the process with the remaining nori sheets and rice until all the sushi rolls are made.
  11. Using a sharp knife, cut the sushi rolls into bite-sized pieces.
  12. Serve the sushi rolls with soy sauce and wasabi.

Notes

  • Make sure to rinse the sushi rice thoroughly to remove excess starch, which can make the rice sticky and mushy.
  • Do not overcook the rice, or it will become too soft and mushy.
  • Use a sharp knife to cut the sushi rolls to avoid crushing the rice and fillings.
