Description

Rice Semiya is a traditional South Indian dish that is easy to prepare and delicious to eat. It is a type of vermicelli made from rice flour and is a popular breakfast or snack item in Tamil Nadu.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rice semiya
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 1 tsp chana dal
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 green chillies, chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 cups water
  • Coriander leaves for garnish

Equipment

  • Non-stick pan
  • Spatula
  • Chopping board
  • Knife

Method

  1. Heat oil in a non-stick pan and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add urad dal and chana dal and fry until golden brown.
  2. Add chopped onions, green chillies and fry until onions turn translucent.
  3. Add chopped tomatoes and ginger garlic paste and cook until tomatoes are soft.
  4. Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder and salt to taste and mix well.
  5. Add 2 cups of water and bring it to a boil.
  6. Once the water starts boiling, add rice semiya and mix well.
  7. Cover the pan and cook for 5-7 minutes on low flame or until the semiya is cooked and the water is absorbed.
  8. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.

Notes

  • You can also add vegetables like carrots, peas and beans to make it more nutritious.
  • Adjust the spice level according to your taste.
  • You can also add grated coconut for extra flavour.
