Prep Time

The prep time for this recipe is about 15 minutes.

Cook Time

The cook time for this recipe is approximately 45 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cans evaporated milk (12 oz each)
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk (14 oz)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Medium saucepan
  • 9-inch round baking dish
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
2. In a medium saucepan, add the granulated sugar and heat over medium-high heat.
3. Stir the sugar continuously until it melts and turns a golden brown color.
4. Pour the melted sugar into a 9-inch round baking dish and swirl the dish to coat the bottom evenly.
5. In a large mixing bowl, whisk the eggs until they are well beaten.
6. Add the evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and vanilla extract to the eggs and whisk until everything is well combined.
7. Pour the mixture into the baking dish with the caramelized sugar.
8. Place the baking dish into a larger baking pan and fill the larger pan with hot water until it reaches about halfway up the sides of the flan dish.
9. Carefully transfer the pans to the preheated oven and bake for approximately 45 minutes or until the edges are set and the center is jiggly.
10. Once done, remove the flan from the oven and let it cool to room temperature.
11. Once cooled, cover the flan with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or until it is completely chilled.
12. To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan to loosen it from the dish.
13. Place a plate on top of the dish and flip the dish over so that the flan is now on the plate.
14. Drizzle any remaining caramel sauce over the top of the flan and serve.

Notes

- Be sure to continuously stir the sugar as it melts to prevent it from burning or clumping.
- When pouring the mixture into the dish with the caramel sauce, do so carefully to avoid disturbing the caramel layer.
- Letting the flan cool to room temperature before refrigerating it helps to prevent condensation from forming on the surface.
